This painting is an adaptation of a series of scrolls by the nonconformist Qing artist, Shi-Tao, called, "Plants of Virtue, Rocks by Water." Each branch, leaf, and petal is described with a single, precise stroke. Many brush strokes have been codified into the history of ink-brush painting. This fact carries a dense visual history with which to contend. This reinterpretation envisions Shi-Tao's painting as if a storm just passed over the forest, tearing the edges of the bamboo leaves, leaving room for the bloom of new buds in the morning. ■
